Parenting 101: Big Boy Panties

This past weekend our little three-year-old finally crossed the threshold to little boyhood and the beginning of a new life for his parents.  What happened?  He decided that now was the time to be potty trained. With a little help from our friend Lightning McQueen (see Cars the movie if you are drawing a blank) and some semi-clever, semi-lucky parenting, Matty is now a proud wearer of underwear.

If only that was where this stopped. As with most kids there is a funny story that quickly follows the potty training endeavor. For us it was "big boy panties".  Being in a class with mostly little girls, Matty has been inundated with the language of the female...since he stubbornly wasn't one of the first to get potty trained.  So he promptly told us tonight after his bath that he needed his panties back on. Michelle and I tried to explain that little girls where panties and boys where underwear, but that only made things more confusing...to the point where he asked Michelle if she wore big boy panties too.

At some points it's better to simply smile and live to fight another day. So tonight we're a house full of big boy panties!

  1. Ah, this made me laugh. Honey, you know--my mom who adores Matty, has called them that since Luke was potty training, and Jake can't stand it. It has stuck around here too as a big joke. Matty will fit right in... in his panties.
